It’s become pretty popular in recent years for big businesses (such as Nationwide, Guinness, and the BBC) to use spoken word poetry in their ad campaigns. In May of 2021 I was hired by Glasgow-based Sonnet Youth, on behalf of Scotland’s biggest ferry operators Caledonian MacBrayne (known as CalMac), to perform a poem entitled Isle Be Back for a future advert.
The idea behind the ad was that Sonnet Youth were to contract one performance poet to each perform one line of the poem, which would then be knitted together. I was asked by Cat Hepburn of Sonnet Youth to perform the poem for CalMac, and now (at time of writing 17.06.21) I am looking forward to the release of the advertisement, which will feature my voice among a handful of other Scottish and Scotland-based poets.
You can visit the CalMac website, here.
You can listen to some of my (own) spoken word, here, or read some of my poetry here.
I was paid £30 for the performance and recording of the entire poem.
